A sample I made for Bephie's Beauty Supply back when I was developing my own prints and textiles for the brand. The illustration covering this top was hand drawn by ablack woman graphic designer. Hands, twisted hair, hair pins, rollers, and bantu-knot silhouettes, rendered in a fine blue toile-style line drawing across cream fabric. If you look closely at the hem, you'll even find "Bephie's Beauty Supply" woven directly into the print.
I ended up pausing this chapter of BBS — I was designing my own clothes and prints while also measuring myself against a brand we'd acquired with over 30 years of history behind it (UNION LA), and it became a lot to carry alongside everything else. This sample is what came out of that period of actually trying, before I stepped back.
A dramatic sailor-style collar, elastic banded cuffs, and an elastic waistband finish the silhouette — feminine, a little playful, and completely one-of-one.
